SMALL WORLD PROJECT
Project Summary
Subject/Content Area: Math - data collection; Language Arts - expressive and narrative writing and reference skills; Geography - places and regions.
Target Audience: This project is design for 4th and 5th grade bilingual (Spanish/English) students, reading below grade level and Limited English proficient.
Project Goals: As a result of their participation in the Small World Project, the students will develop the interest and abilities necessary to find reliable information with the help of the World Wide Web. They will understand the importance of global communication. Students will learn to use the resources available through the Internet.
Learner Outcomes: Student will:
- Select appropriate resources to collect reliable data.
- Demonstrate the ability to collect information using the tools of the WWW.
- Effectively communicate the results of the research orally, visually, and in writing.
- Organize and analyze collected data to support a course of action.
- Understand and apply basic and advanced concepts of data analysis and distributions
- Synthesize the information received from various places and make an informed decision.
- Effectively use a variety of strategies in the problem-solving process
- Know the location of places, geographic features and patterns of the environment
- Understand the nature and complexity of the Earth's cultural mosaics.
- Create homepages for others to learn about their issues.
- Recognize that all languages use different patterns to communicate and apply this knowledge to the native language.
Alignment with National Standards: The Small World Project demonstrates elements of The National Science Education Standards:
- Science Standards: 11. Understands energy types, sources and conversions, and their relationship to heat and temperature; 15. Understands the nature of scientific inquiry; 17. Understands the nature of technological design.
- Math Standards: 1. Effectively uses a variety of strategies in the problem solving process; 3. Uses basic and advanced procedures while performing the process of computation; 6. Understands and applies basic and advanced concepts of data analysis and distributions.
- Language Arts Standards: 1. Demonstrates competence in the general skills and strategies of the writing process; 4. Effectively gathers and uses information for research purposes; 7. Demonstrates competence in the general skills and strategies for reading information.
- Geography Standards: 1. Understands the characteristics and uses of maps, globes and other geographic tools and technologies; 4. Understands the physical and human characteristics of place; 10. Understands the nature and complexity of Earth's cultural mosaics.
- Foreign Language: 1. Uses the target language to engage in conversations, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions and information; 5. Recognizes that different languages use different patterns to communicate and applies this knowledge to the native language.
Assessment of Students: Students will be assessed through journal writing, performance presentation, a written product, a project rubric and self-assessment.
