WWF CITES Site

CITES (pronounced "site-ease")--the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species-- is the only global treaty that aims to regulate trade in threatened and endangered species. During the 10th CITES meeting (June 6 to 20, 1997) in Harare, Zimbabwe, WWF's Dana Lauren West filed daily reports to this site.

Student CITES Project

Students to the rescue! Five teams of high school students located in Ft. Lauderdale, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Chicago/Dolton (that's us!!!) and New York City are working on a project to educate consumers about the impact of wildlife trade on endangered and threatened species.

Each year, billions of dollars are swapped for scaled, winged, shelled and deboned species. These species are among the world's "most wanted" plants and animals--10 of the most threatened species in significant demand for international trade.

The Animal Diversity Web is a collection of pictures and information about animals. Accounts of individual species include information on distributions, natural history, conservation, and economic importance, along with pictures and sounds if available.

CITES Home Page

"The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, entered into force on 1 July 1975 and now has a membership of 136 countries. These countries act by banning commercial international trade in an agreed list of endangered species and by regulating and monitoring trade in others that might become endangered."

Endangered and Extinct Species Lists

Search endangered species by common or scientific name or click on the regional map shows which species are threatened and endangered in each state and lists fact sheets for some of those species.

Keyword search current legislation and the Federal Register.

The Thomas site (for Thomas Jefferson) is a project of the Library of Congress. Search by keyword and find the full text of bills being considered in the house and senate, full text of hearings and speeches, the Federal Register and more. This is a great site to use to extract information about the legislative process.

Exhibits at Brookfield Zoo

"Located on 216 acres 20 minutes from downtown Chicago, Brookfield Zoo is home to nearly 3,000 animals and more than 500 native and exotic plant species in 25 exhibit areas. These exhibits highlight the connection between people and the natural world and inspire action on behalf of the environment."

The Chicagoland Environmental Network

Provides visitors and the general public with information about how they can help protect the local environment. Each year, the zoo librarians and other staff answer several thousand requests for information on caring for wildlife.

Midewin National Tall Grass Prairie

On February 10, 1996, United States President Bill Clinton signed into law the Illinois Land Conservation Act of 1995, transferring the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant from the Department of Defense to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and established the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. The nation's first federally-designated tallgrass prairie encompasses 19,195 acres, 40 miles southwest of Chicago.

"The Fisheye View Cam is used by marine biologists to study coral behaviors at Fisheye View labs in Coral Gables, Florida. A remote camera feeds a Macintosh 840av, which captures one frame of 640x480 video every 3 seconds. When viewed at 100-1,000 times normal speed, these time-lapse motion studies allow scientists to better understand these unusual slow-moving marine animals."
