Writing a Resume


Your resume if the first work sample that a potential employer sees. It creates a first impression so it is extremely important. It should be an honest, concise, well-organized presentation of you.

Resume Styles

Basic Resume
Best used for those without related experience, this resume should contain the following information.

Chronological Resume
Choose this resume when you have lots of career-related experience. List work experience in reverse chronological order, because it highlights your growth and development. This is similar to the Basic Resume but also includes:

Functional Resume
This resume emphasizes capabilities, skill levels and accomplishments rather than job titles or time spent at various jobs. This format is effective if you have limited work experience and want to highlight marketable skills.

Objective
One sentence stating the kind of position you want, what you want to do, the skills you want to use, the experience and/or background you bring and the environment in which you with to work.

Education
Must have: Name of institution (school), city/state, degree, major and year the degree was / will be received.

Optional: Overseas schools, course work directly related to the job, minor, G.P.A.
(grade point average), academic honors, and computer skills.

Experience
Must have: Name of organization, city/state, job title, dates of employment, and description of accomplishments and responsibilities. Include volunteer work, internships, student teaching, research projects, summer and part-time jobs, or other related work.

Final Checklist

1. Do sentences begin with action verbs?
2. Is the writing style consistent (the same throughout) and readable?
3. Are grammar, punctuation and spelling correct?
4. Is there enough blank space?
5. Did you pick the right format choice to present your background?
6. Is the information relevant, specific and concise (to the point)?
7. Are your accomplishments and problem-solving skills emphasized?
8. Are your name, address(es), telephone number (s) at the top of the first page?
