Science Activity
Who Lives Where?
Purpose: To construct a chart describing the properties of the three major life zones and to show the typical life forms found in each.
Materials:
reference sources..................poster board
construction paper.................scissors
markers.............................other "craft" supplies
Procedure: As experts in marine life, you and your partners have been hired to develop a chart describing the properties of the three major life and showing the kinds of organisms that live there. So many different organisms live in the ocean that it is impossible for anyone to know them all, so you and your team decide to split the task up into three parts as follows:
1. Two of you will identify the names and characteristics of
ocean life zones and prepare a large chart on poster board.
2. The remaining three members of your team will develop a list
of fifteen different kinds of organisms, five for each zone, and
prepare an information card for each organism. Each person should try to
find a wide variety of organisms. The contract requires six things to be
on each card:
diagram of the organism
name of the organism
type of organism( fish, crustacean, algae...)
zone in which the organism lives
food chain placement
does the organism live on the bottom, float, or swim freely ?
3. When your team has finished, compile team data by placing the card for each organism in the appropriate life zone and in the appropriate position within that zone. You will need to exchange quite a bit of information in order to do this accurately. You will also have to make sure the chart is large enough to hold all of the information cards.
