The Fermilab LInC

Leadership Institute Integrating Internet, Instruction and Curriculum

Best Educational Practice

Research indicates that students learn best when teachers use engaged learning practices and incorporate technology. These concepts were the basis for the development of LInC curriculum projects. North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) describes these concepts in its publication Plugging In.

Our first attempt to help participants understand these concepts was difficult because there were very few models. Later, as more resources were available, we incorporated articles, videos (ASCD Teaching and Learning with the Internet) and scenarios (NCREL/ISBE Learning through Technology: Study Group Framework and Profile Tool) to help participants develop a vision for their classroom and district.

Participants were advised not to add new units to an already full year. They were advised to redesign their units of study based upon local, state and national standards and available technology. Additional resources included Planning for the 21st Century, and the Use of Telecommunications in Education.

In each session, participants as district teams, developed a Staff Development Plan to guide their efforts to disseminate their learning throughout their district. In the last session, participants along with district administrators, played the Systems Thinking Systems Changing simulation game. This activity enabled them to gain an appreciation for the planning and staff development that would be required to implement engaged learning and to effectively use technology in their district.
