Subscribing and Unsubscribing Netiquette

Subscribing and Unsubscribing

The first step in using a Listserv Mailing list is to send the "HELP" command. In doing this you will know what commands your Listserv Server requires you to use. When you fill out this mail message be sure to leave the "SUBJECT" line blank.

Read the commands carefully and keep this mail for future reference.

Next you should investigate which Mail Lists interest you. A great resource for this is the Index of all Listservs. To find out what Mailing Lists are handled by your Listserv Server you can use a "Lists" command. This command will have the Listserv Server send you a list containing all of the open mailing lists maintained by your server.

Now go ahead and subscribe to the desired Mailing List. Remember you still are not mailing any messages to the list members yet. You still are just sending commands to instruct the server software to add you to a list.

Generally you recieve a reply in a matter of minutes. The reply time is determined by the Sever Manager and how often the Server has been instructed to forward new mail.

This is perhaps not the following step but you most likely will need to know how to UNSUBSCRIBE to a mailing list. Many mailing lists deal in hundreds of messages. The list you subscribe to may not be what you thought it was or the mail volume is too much. You may need to UNSUBSCRIBE for a short period of time, perhaps when you go on vacation.

To access a list of those who have subscribed to a particular list use the "SEND/LIST" command. This requests the addresses of those on a specific Mailing List.

Netiquette

The Internet and the WWW is a world wide community of people all looking to share and find information as well as entertainment. One of the exciting things about the internet is its rapid unregulated growth. The net is an exciting place that operates extremely well without any form of official governing body. This is largely due to the fact that the longtime users of the internet have self regulated their own behavior. Over the years certain norms of behavior have grown up and have become known as Netiquette. An excellent document outlining some of these rules of internet netiquette was wriiten by Chuq Von Rospach
