What is E-Mail?

E-mail is electronically sent mail. It is sent through a computer modem to someone else who also has a computer modem. In order to get e-mail, you must subscribe to a server and have an e-mail address. E-mail is delevered much quicker than the United States mail so you can get your replies sooner.

Below is a copy of an e-mail form. You will notice that there are different parts to be filled in.

Parts of the E-mail Window
Mail to:
Enter the e-mail address of the person to whom you sending a message.
Cc:
For now, we will be leaving this area blank. You would enter in this area who else should get a copy of this message.
Subject:
In this area, you would put a few words about what the message is about.
Attachment:
If you had any information such as something in a file or a document, you would note this here.
Text Area:
This is the large white space at the bottom of the mail window where you type in your message

Sending E-Mail
Assignment:

Now it is time for you to write some practice e-mail messages. You will need to be working with a partner. Because each of you does not have your own e-mail address, we are going to change a few of the steps. Read all the directions first before going to e-mail form. To open the form, just click on the picture.

    Here are the steps to follow:
  1. Click with the mouse in the "Subject:".
  2. Put who you want to receive this message in the "Subject:" space.
  3. Leave the "Cc:" area blank.
  4. Next, click with the mouse in text area.
  5. Now type your message.
  6. Sign your name athe bottom of the message.
  7. Click on the send button with the mouse.
  8. Close the e-mail window.

Congratulations!
you have just sent an e-mail communication.

Retrieving your E-mail

Now that you have sent a message using e-mail, it is time to pick up the message that was sent to you.

  1. Find the small envelope in the bottom right hand corner of the Netscape screen.
  2. Click on the envelope with the mouse pointer.
  3. This should open the Netscape Mail window.
  4. Now, look on the left side of the screen. Click on the words "Inbox".
  5. This will show the messages that have come in on the right side of the screen.
  6. Look under the subject column and find your name.
  7. Click on your name with the mouse pointer.
  8. Your message will appear on the bottom of the screen.
  9. Read what your message says.
  10. Next, print out your e-mail by finding the printer icon at the top of the mail window. Click on it with the mouse pointer.
