Context:
- The Health/Wellness Interdisciplinary Unit covers a wide variety of skills and concepts in the 7th Grade curriculum. The Unit begins with the study of the human body systems in Science. Concurrently students are selecting a disease or condition to carry out a research project in Language class. One of the decision making components is the freedom and input students have in selecting their own disease and condition. In Social Studies students analyze their family tree and look for health conditions and disease which may be prevelant in their family. In Math students discover the ratio and proportions of the human body. (Did you know your foot would fit in between your wrist and elbow?) In Literature students read the novel, The Acorn People.
Students view a movie,The Killer Plagues, from The Learning Channel. This movie discusses the ease of transmission in today's transient society. A child who was in a high-risk area of Africa flies home to New York. On the plane he becomes violently ill and is immediatley rushed to a local hospital. He does not respond to immediate treatments which leads the medical staff to look for a tropical plague. The hospital staff rely on the Center of Disease Control to assisst in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the plague spreading. Following the movie students are then given the Prompt for the project.
