The following is a tutorial for the WWW Institute for Teachers at Fermilab.
You can access the following tutorial through World Wide Web at the URL
http://www-ed.fnal.gov/net_train/train_install_tutorial.html.

- Getting the latest Version of Netscape
- Setting up the Preferences in Netscape
- Getting rid of old versions of Netscape
- Installing the Helper Applications
- Installing "SoundMachine" to play audio files.
- Installing "JPEGView" to display JPEG, PICT, and GIF files quickly.
- Installing "Sparkle" for playing MPEG and Quicktime movies.
- Installing "Telnet"
- Make a Floppy with the new version of Netscape and Stuffit Expander
- Be able to install Netscape from the Internet and set up the Preferences.
- Be able to install Helper Applications for WWW from the Internet
To use Netscape, we need both the Netscape software and the helper
applications. Information on downloading and installing this software is
available throughout World Wide Web. We will use existing resources as much
as possible, but if we are unable to access them because of high network
traffic, then we will copy files from a shareable folder on the WWW server set
up for this tutorial. This folder is called WWW Software.
You should get use to downloading the latest copies of software from the Web.
You should take back to your schools the latest copy of Netscape and Stuffit
Expander on a floppy disk. Using these two programs, you should be able to get
everything you need for your machines at your school or home. Note: if you are
going to run Netscape on a PowerPC, do not use the application that you install
on the computers in the Tech Room. It will be for a 68000 Macintosh. You
should either install a Fat version using the custom install or download
Netscape again from the PowerMac.
When doing this tutorial, you will be using both the hard copy version and the
network version.
You need:
- the hard copy version to follow the steps you need to take when accessing
other pages on the network (i.e., no longer displaying the on-line tutorial)
- the on-line version when you are given instructions to click on hyper links
in the tutorial.
You will need to go back and forth between the on-line
tutorial and the pages referred to in the tutorial. The simplest way to do
this is to use make Bookmarks or the "Go" Menu in "Netscape" and select the
page you want.
This tutorial assumes that you have a running version of "Netscape" and
"StuffIt Expander(TM)3.5.2" on your machine. Netscape should be set up to
download to the Temporary Folder. If you are working on machines elsewhere and
want to be sure you are set up properly, refer to the document Instructions for
Setting Up Netscape that we used in the January 30th WWW Institute.
To do:
- If you are on a computer in the Tech Room in the Lederman Science Center,
go the Fermi Education Center Internet Training page on the Bookmarks
- click on "Installing WWW Application Software".
- Add this new page to your Bookmarks so you can access it easily.
- Select "Preferences" under the "Options" menu.
- Use the "pull-down" menu to select "Applications and Directories".
- Look under Directories and make sure that it is set for the "Temporary Files"
folder.
- Use the "pull-down" menu to select "Helper Applications
- Make sure "Netscape" is set to launch "Stuffit Expander" for hqx files.
Netscape has built into its software an easy way to get at the latest version.
The instructions here assume that the latest version is Netscape 1.1N. If you
are downloading a newer version, just substitute the new name for "Netscape
1.1N".
To do:
- For version 1.1N of Netscape, select "Netscape Home" under the "Directory "Menu. If you are using an older version of Netscape, click on "Welcome" in the Directory Buttons. If they are not showing, select "Show Directory Buttons" under the "Options" menu.
- scroll down until you find a link called "expanded list of FTP and mirror
sites". Click on it.
On the "Netscape Navigator FTP and Mirror
Sites" page are a number of places from which you can download the new version
of Netscape.
To do:
- Make a new folder called "Netscape 1.1N Folder" in the "WWW" folder.
- Choose a site near you and click on it to go to the ftp site. If it
fails, try another site.
- Once you have accessed the first page from the ftp site, click on Mac if
you have more than one choice.
- Click on "Readme" to learn about installing the software. These
instructions are included below.
- Click on "Netscape -1.1N.hqx". This will start downloading a file "Netscape-1.1N.hqx" and then invoke "Stuffit Expander" and expand it to
"Netscape 1.1N Installer" in your "Temporary Files" folder. Note: some sites will give you a file "netscape-1.1N.hqx.gz". If you get this, then try another site.
- Quit "Netscape".
- Switch to the "Finder" and go to the "Temporary Files" folder and double click
on "Netscape 1.1N Installer". You may want to keep the "Temporary Files" folder open
off to the side of your desktop so you can access it easily for the rest of the
Tutorial.
- Click "Continue" and it will display a dialog box.
- Observe where on the disk it is set to install the software. Click "Select Folder" and find the "Netscape 1.1N Folder" in the "WWW" folder. Do not open this folder, just click "Select Folder"
when it is highlighted.
- Click "Install" to get a binary which matches your Macintosh CPU.
- Click "Quit" after it tells you it has successfully installed "Netscape".
- Drag file "Cache" in folder "Netscape" in folder "Preferences" in folder
"System Folder" on the hard disk to the Trash.
- Double click on the Netscape application that you have just
installed in the "WWW" folder.
- As soon as you are certain "Netscape" is installed correctly, you can drag the files "Netscape 1.1N Installer" and "netscape-1.1N.hqx" in the
"Temporary Files" folder to the trash.
- Empty the Trash. (use "Special Menu" in the "Finder").
- Make an alias for the "Netscape" application and put it in the "Apple Menu
Items" folder in the "System Folder".
- Click once on the "Netscape" Application to select it.
- Select "Make Alias" under the "File" menu. This will make another file
called "Netscape 1.1N alias".
- Double click on the "System Folder" on the hard drive. Look for the
folder "Apple Menu Items" in the "System Folder" and double click on it.
- Select and drag the file named "Netscape 1.1N alias" from the "Netscape"
Folder to the "Apple Menu Items" Folder.
- Drag alias for old versions of "Netscape" to the trash.
- Now you can start "Netscape" by using the "Apple" menu and selecting
"Netscape 1.1 N alias".
This is on a separate page because it loads lots of graphics. Click here to go to it.
To do:
- When you are convinced that your newly installed Netscape is working o.k.,
you can drag any old versions of Netscape from the WWW folder to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash.
Two good sources for helper or client applications are at National
Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)
We will download the helper applications from Jon Wiederspan's pages unless we
have some problems.
If you have difficulty downloading any of the applications listed below from
the network, drag the application from the "WWW Software" folder on the Education Server to the "WWW" folder in the "Application" folder on your hard disk.
To do:
- Click on one of the links above to go to the page with the helper
applications. if you are not using an electronic version of this tutorial,
open one of the following URL's
http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/MacMosaic/HelperApps.html,
http://www.comvista.com/net/www/clientacc.html
- Add this page to your Bookmarks so you can access it easily.
To do:
- Find "SoundMachine" on the page you just loaded and click on it to start
the downloading process. It will write a file into the "Temporary Files" folder.
- Drag the "SoundMachine" folder from the "Temporary Files" Folder into the "WWW"
folder.
- Now test it. Go back to the on-line Tutorial page and locate these
instructions. Click on the following link to download a sound file It will
put a file called rick.intro.au in your Temporary Folder and start up the
application "SoundMachine" and play the sound file.
Rick
Ziegler at Dinosaur Exhibit at University of Hawaii. The URL for this is:
http://www.hcc.hawaii.edu/hccinfo/dinos/rick.intro.au
- Quit "SoundMachine" using the "File" menu.
- Drag all "SoundMachine" and "rick.intro" files in the "Temporary Files" Folder
to the Trash.
- Drag any old versions of "SoundMachine" in the "WWW" Folder to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash.
Netscape already displays JPEG, and GIF files internally. Most Web sites do
not have PICT files. However many graphic programs that you might use to
create images for authoring create PICT files. You generally need gif files
for the Web. You can use JPEGView for converting pict files to gif files.
To do:
- In Netscape use the "Bookmarks" menu to go to the page with the helper applications (Jon Wiederspan's or NCSA's page).
- Find "JPEGView" and click on it to start the downloading process. It will
write files into the "Temporary Files" folder.
- Drag the "JPEGView" folder from the "Temporary Files" Folder into the "WWW"
folder.
- Now test it. Go back to the on-line Tutorial page and locate these
instructions. Now click on the following link to download an image file It
will put a file called "world.pict" in your "Temporary Folder" and start up the
application "JPEGView" and show the image.
Image
of the World in Pict format. The URL for this is:
http://www-ed.fnal.gov/net_train/local/world.pict. Note: it is possible that the preferences for Helper Applications are set to launch SimpleText instead of JPEGView for pict files. If you launch SimpleText instead of JPEGView, change the Preferences.
- Quit "JPEGView" using the "File" menu.
- Drag all "JPEGView" and "world.pict" files in the Temporary File to the
Trash.
- Drag any old versions of "Jpegview" in the "WWW" Folder to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash.
For the class in the Tech Room at Fermilab, we are not going to download the
latest version. We will copy Sparkle 1.7 from the shared folder "WWW
Software". Those of you who want to use the older version based on the
following information should make a copy of it onto a floppy to take home.
Version 2.4.3 of Sparkle requires Quicktime 2.0 and the Thread Manager in the
System Folder. If you don't own a legal copy of Quicktime 2.0, you need to
order one ($9.95). Information about this is at
http://quicktime.apple.com/ordering-qt.html.
Quicktime
Ordering Information.
The Thread Manager is incompatible with Mode32 which is needed on Mac II, IIx,
IIcs or SE/30's with System 7 to run in 32 bit mode. If you have Quicktime
2.0 and do not have a problem with the Thread Manager, then we recommend
downloading the latest version of Sparkle. The ftp address for downloading
Thread Manager is:
