Goals

Introduction

To use Netscape, we need both the Netscape software and the helper applications. Information on downloading and installing this software is available throughout World Wide Web. We will use existing resources as much as possible, but if we are unable to access them because of high network traffic, then we will copy files from a shareable folder on the WWW server set up for this tutorial. This folder is called WWW Software.

You should get use to downloading the latest copies of software from the Web. You should take back to your schools the latest copy of Netscape and Stuffit Expander on a floppy disk. Using these two programs, you should be able to get everything you need for your machines at your school or home. Note: if you are going to run Netscape on a PowerPC, do not use the application that you install on the computers in the Tech Room. It will be for a 68000 Macintosh. You should either install a Fat version using the custom install or download Netscape again from the PowerMac.

When doing this tutorial, you will be using both the hard copy version and the network version.

You need:

You will need to go back and forth between the on-line tutorial and the pages referred to in the tutorial. The simplest way to do this is to use make Bookmarks or the "Go" Menu in "Netscape" and select the page you want.

Setting up Netscape for the Tutorial

This tutorial assumes that you have a running version of "Netscape" and "StuffIt Expander(TM)3.5.2" on your machine. Netscape should be set up to download to the Temporary Folder. If you are working on machines elsewhere and want to be sure you are set up properly, refer to the document Instructions for Setting Up Netscape that we used in the January 30th WWW Institute.

To do:

Installing Netscape

Getting the latest Version of Netscape

Netscape has built into its software an easy way to get at the latest version. The instructions here assume that the latest version is Netscape 1.1N. If you are downloading a newer version, just substitute the new name for "Netscape 1.1N".

To do:

On the "Netscape Navigator FTP and Mirror Sites" page are a number of places from which you can download the new version of Netscape.

To do:

Setting up the Preferences in Netscape

This is on a separate page because it loads lots of graphics. Click here to go to it.

Getting rid of old versions of Netscape

To do:

Installing the Helper or Client Applications

Two good sources for helper or client applications are at National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)

We will download the helper applications from Jon Wiederspan's pages unless we have some problems.

If you have difficulty downloading any of the applications listed below from the network, drag the application from the "WWW Software" folder on the Education Server to the "WWW" folder in the "Application" folder on your hard disk.

To do:

Installing "SoundMachine" to play audio files.

To do:

Installing "JPEGView" to display JPEG, PICT, and GIF files quickly.

Netscape already displays JPEG, and GIF files internally. Most Web sites do not have PICT files. However many graphic programs that you might use to create images for authoring create PICT files. You generally need gif files for the Web. You can use JPEGView for converting pict files to gif files.

To do:

Installing "Sparkle" for playing MPEG and Quicktime movies.

For the class in the Tech Room at Fermilab, we are not going to download the latest version. We will copy Sparkle 1.7 from the shared folder "WWW Software". Those of you who want to use the older version based on the following information should make a copy of it onto a floppy to take home.

Version 2.4.3 of Sparkle requires Quicktime 2.0 and the Thread Manager in the System Folder. If you don't own a legal copy of Quicktime 2.0, you need to order one ($9.95). Information about this is at http://quicktime.apple.com/ordering-qt.html. Quicktime Ordering Information.

The Thread Manager is incompatible with Mode32 which is needed on Mac II, IIx, IIcs or SE/30's with System 7 to run in 32 bit mode. If you have Quicktime 2.0 and do not have a problem with the Thread Manager, then we recommend downloading the latest version of Sparkle. The ftp address for downloading Thread Manager is: ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Macintosh/ystem.Software/Other.System.Software/Thread.Manager.2.0.1.sea.hqx.

Downloading the latest Version from the Network (Skip if you are in the Class at the Education Center- go to the step to get Sparkle 1.7)

To do:

Getting "Sparkle 1.7" from the Shared Folder on the Education Server

Installing "Telnet"

To do:

Make a Floppy with the new version of Netscape and Stuffit Expander
