Internet Training: Newsgroups

Readings

Read the folling information on newsgroups from Netscape:
(Don't worry - they're short.)

Try It

  1. VIEW ALL NEWSGROUPS.

  2. SUBSCRIBE to fnal.test and fnal.ed.www
You will need to click on fnal.* to expand the list.

  3. Find a K12 newsgroup of interest to SUBSCRIBE to.
You will need to use the Netscape BACK button to get back to the previous list.

  4. Find a "sci" newsgroup of interest to SUBSCRIBE to.
You will need to use the Netscape BACK button to get back to the previous list.

  5. Read a couple messages in fnal.test
Read it by clicking on the title line. (This group is not very interesting, I know :-)

  6. Use Netscape's BACK or THIS NEWSGROUP to get back to the newsgroup articles.

  7. POST A NEW ARTICLE to fnal.test
You will have to use the Netscape RELOAD button to make this work. It may take a few minutes to get there.

  8. POST A FOLLOW UP to another WWW institute teacher's article.
You must be reading an article to post a follow up.

  9. Send e-mail to the author *without* posting to the newsgroup.
You must be reading the article to do this. Select MAIL AND POST REPLY and delete the name of the newsgroup from the POST TO field in the message.

  10. Use Netscape's BACK or THIS NEWSGROUP to get back to the newsgroup articles.

  11. Use RELOAD to make sure your articles arrived. Your follow up article should be indented under the original article you responded to.

  12. UNSUBSCRIBE from fnal.test

  13. Browse through the messages in fnal.ed.www and the k12 newsgroup you subscribed to and the sci group you subscribed to.

  14. UNSUBSCRIBE from these groups if you are no longer interested in them.

  15. Use Netscape's OPEN to go directly to the fnal.ed.www newsgroup. Use the URL "news:fnal.ed.www" (without the quotes). Notice that the URL does not contain the normal double slash after the colon. In general use the URL "news:news.group.name" to go directly to the newsgroup "news.group.name".

  16. Check out other newsgroups if you have time.
