Welcome to the Winter 1999 LInC Online program. We are excited to have you with us. We are looking forward to our journey together. At this point, you probably have a lot of questions. Most can be answered by going over the information included on

Getting Started in LInC Online - Orientation and
Syllabus

and completing the first two sets of assignments on the

Winter 1999 LInC Assignments Sheet

and browsing over the material covered on these pages. The assignment sheet includes links to all the resources we think will help you with each assignments as it is listed.

If you have any trouble, post a message on the course online bulletin board (COW) for help .... your colleagues or facilitators will be happy to help out. And always have a pencil and notepad handy while working during this course, to jot down questions you may have, tips and/or ideas you find, and anything that you want to share. Jokes are especially appreciated!

General Course Information

Here are a few important bits of information that you need to be aware of:

• Our course runs from Wednesday, Feb 3 through Wednesday, May 5.
• Chats will be held on Wednesdays from 6PM-8PM Central Standard Time (Chicago). (That is 7PM-9PM on the East Coast and 4PM-6PM on the West Coast).
• Course assignments are listed on the Winter 1999 LInC Online Assignments page.
• The schedule for our chat sessions is listed on the Winter 1999 LInC Online Chat Schedule page.
• The first set of assignments are due Wednesday February 3 before your first Chat session. (These assignments are "orientation" readings, downloading/testing out the chat software, and bringing questions to the chat.) The next assignments are due Sunday February 10. After this, most assignments are due on Sundays. Presentations / Sharings of your work will be on Wednesdays. Please see the assignment page and chat schedule for details.
• As assignments are completed, they will be listed on the Winter 1999 LInC Online Assignments Completed page. Make sure you reload the page with each visit so that you get the most current listing.
• With very few exceptions, all of the LInC materials and tools are available to you online (24 hours per day, 7 days per week).

Technical Information for Communications and Tools

The following information is "nitty-gritty" stuff that you will need as we progress through the course. We don't expect you to know what this all means at the beginning - You will be given this information when needed along with instructions on what it all means. But it is nice to have it in one spot that you can bookmark, or print out, so that you have it as a reference. That is why we are including it now. No, there is not going to be a quiz over this section!

• We will be using Conferencing On the Web (COW) tool for our electronic bulletin board. The COW for our class will be at http://www.fnal.gov/tools/cow/
• We will be using MSChat (for PC) or ChatNet (for Mac) for our real-time chat tool.

Passwords and account information will be sent via e-mail to the course listserv as it is needed. (These wouldn't offer very good protection if they were posted on a web page :-)

Web Publishing

• The Web server computer you will be using for your project is called www-ed.fnal.gov
• The File Transfer (FTP) server computer you will be using is the same computer: www-ed.fnal.gov
• Your project folder will go in edwebserver/lincon/w99/projects/
